The Impossibles - Anthology '94-'98 (1999)

Ska-punk that sounds like old Weezer sometimes.

I remember there was a time when I drove all night behind the wheel of our tour van. I just had gotten the mixes to THE IMPOSSIBLES' first record and I thought it was amazing. I fell in love with it, I listened to it for hours and hours, over and over on the drive. Words couldn't and still can't describe how excited I was to have a chance at releasing that record.

There aren't many records that I've listened to enough to where I could give an informed review without actually listening to the music while writing. There's the Clash's London Calling, probably Minor Threat's Discography, and maybe Rancid's Life Won't Wait, though I'd have to look at the insert booklet to see who all the guest musicians were on that one. Yet here I am, sitting at my desk at work, able to play every single one of the 20 (or 22 on some releases) songs of the Impossibles' Anthology through in my head.

The first few words of the record, "Hi, we're the Impossibles from Austin, Texas!" offers a small piece of information that leads to more. The Impossibles were heavily influenced by fellow Southern punk band Avail, and as luck would have it, opening for Avail proved to be a major stepping stone in gaining recognition in the punk scene. From a purely sonic perspective, I can more easily hear a similarity to Weezer (in ska-punk form), though since Weezer's Blue Album didn't come out until May of 1994, it's hard to believe the influence was there at that time, though the same urgent feeling of onsettting tragedy that Weezer would eventually make famous underlies most of the Impossibles' songs.

The band's seminal fan favorite "Eightball" starts off the record, with a crushing pre-verse that leads into a whimsical semi-ska verse that demonstrates the band's strong and witty lyrics: "It is, without a doubt, hard to figure out this magic ball / What gives it its mojo powers, and makes it so mystical? / Is it the faith of over a million kids who find it believable? Or is it a bunch of four-sided dice trapped in a black plastic ball?!"

The second track, "Widowmaker," appears twice on the album in two different forms, and like "Eightball," provides the framework for much of the Impossibles' song structure: third wave ska or ska-punk verses with heavily distorted choruses and plenty of hooks to boot. Since there's not enough space to describe each one of the classics, I'll highlight some of my favorite lines from their stellar lyrics.
"Back for the Attack": "Problems surfaced and they capsized our relationship / I now propose this expedition to salvage it / The weather may start getting rough / Our tiny ship may be tossed / I'll not be stopped by acts of God, I'll get you back at any cost!"
"Leave No Man Behind": "Every once in awhile I get tangled up on my loose ends / And I strangle myself on promises made to old friends. / Just once he'd like to take one step forward, not two steps back / Like the drops in the bucket balanced on his back / The little things add up so fast."
"Something Fierce": "It's never cold enough / My Rubik's Cube is never solved...unless taken apart / I'm hung from the highest tree / The birds won't nest with me / As the slingshots take aim / The bull's eye is on my frame."
"Fatboy": "In elementary I was the lowest class / A bitter little kid good at science and math / Well, I never had a problem making other kids laugh / When they'd steal my lunch or kick me in the ass."
"Fatboy," along with "Everyday" are two of the catchiest songs on the record that also feature the horn playing of guitarist and singer Rory Phillips. Phillips and guitarist Gabe Hascall also often exchange vocal duties like in the emo-tinged "Descriptive Essay, 100 Words." Even the cutest of songs like "Francis," an ode to a teddy bear, is laced with restlessness and unease.

The Impossibles, while still teenagers barely old enough to drive, created a set of masterpieces that most musicians today strive for, but few achieve. The band's raw and bare emotion is cleverly leaked through witty and thoughtful lyrics and perfectly suiting music that toggles between light, fluffy ska to spine-jarring anthems. Along with Minor Threat, Operation Ivy, and the Germs, this is one "Anthology" that no music fan should be without.

The 5 song Sinking EP from the Pennsylvania based Daylight is a must hear if you are a fan of melodic punk/post-hardcore. A lot like Nothington without the rootsy undertones, a little Like Polar Bear Club but less plodding, and sorta like Title Fight but more gruff and less poppy, this is highly recommended for fans of those groups and also for fans of Small Brown Bike and/or Hot Water Music. It’s more interesting than standard-issue melodic punk but more straightforward than your typical post-hardcore without really venturing into terms that could ever be called “the E word”. Maybe even a little like As Friends Rust, or not. If it seems like I’m struggling to find the right words to describe Sinking, it’s because I am. Good EP!

Brand New (2001)

Remember when Brand New was a punk band that only talked about Morrissey? Those were good days. Frontman Jesse Lacey is one of the best lyricists, if not one of the most frustrating (have you ever really listened to the words to Deja Entendu?). He brought his A game to Brand New’s debut, though, serving up several songs that still rank as the group’s best.

Friends Of Friends

Some cool cat named Robert saw my blog here and liked it for whatever reason. Being the radical guy he is, he e-mailed me with some recommendations, the theme being 'lesser known Tallahassee bands'. The one I enjoyed most is Friends Of Friends; they play music that would fit perfectly on the No Idea roster, with their sound seeming to touch on many different sub-subgenres within the realm of 'orgcore'. They use at least two vocalists, and on top of that each of them has a pretty good range, so you get a good amount of variety throughout a listen of the album. The instrumentation changes up as well, furthering the variation in sound provided. This incidentally meant there were some songs or parts of songs I didn't really like, mostly when they sound like bands in the 'darkest corners' of the No Idea sound. Though most of it is really good, and I'll definitely be following the band to see what they do next. Thanks, Rob.Oh, and they offer the latest full-length release for free digital download. They have an EP out as well that you can find and purchase, I'm sure it's good.

Hijack Delta

Hijack Delta is a new supergroup of sorts from the Toronto area. Members have played in such excellent bands as Blue Skies At War, Kover, Crimson Mire, Coldbluesky and Summer of '92, covering a broad spectrum of genres overall. With Ryan Mills on lead vocals, Hijack Delta mostly resembles Kover, but with a more matured and rock-based sound going on. It all works very well, and comes off perfectly live. The band has been passing out copies of their 2-song demo/EP "Loose Genes", which is included in the download below. As a bonus of sorts, the .rar file also contains the third track from their next EP, Robot Suits For Animated Youngsters. More can be heard at their myspace. I urge you to check out not only Hijack Delta, but each of the members' former bands as well.Oh and hey, I'm back from my unexplained absence from this blog... what's up? Hopefully there's still some people checking this thing.

I only just finished my first listen, but trust me: these songs are very, very good. Good enough for me to come out of blogging break and post this as soon as I could, if that means anything. Campaign continues to prove themselves as one of the best new gruff, melodic punk rock/post-hardcore bands around. I would strongly suggest giving it a listen. Pigeonholed is a short but sweet EP of some nicely executed punk rock with a bit of a hardcore edge. The lyrics are probably the most noticeable aspect when you listen to this record as they reflect on the band's views towards the current music industry, pop culture, and moral ethics. They definitely don't hold back with how they write and deliver these lyrics and it's a very redeeming quality on this EP.

Lipona makes good use of all seventeen minutes of this EP by delivering solid melodies, strong lyrics, and fairly impressive musicianship on each track. Beginning immediately on the opening track, "Beginning the Dynamite Era" which starts with soft guitar build-up and develops into a punk anthem. The harmonization of the lines "Our whole lives wasted / We never traced it / Back to ourselves, back to the choices made" in the chorus and the gang vocals in the bridge really drive this song and make it an excellent starter to Pigeonholed. The next track, "Tragedy of the Commons" changes things up a little bit, as this is more in vein of a fast-paced melodic hardcore track. "Hawks" and "Reverberations" show Lipona playing their style of anthemic punk rock that was exhibited on the first track, and this is what they're most comfortable playing. "Reverberations" does feature some great hooks and a well-done bridge that makes this track somewhat memorable.

The one curve-ball they throw at you is the acoustic track, "Shooty Hoops." This is arguably the most noticeable track on the record and it's also probably the weakest. It suffers from being somewhat cheesy and being out of place with the other songs on the EP. One positive thing is the lyrics that tell a story of the band's negative attitude towards mainstream music and media.

Heartbreaker is the surprise collaboration between MSTRKRFT and John Legend originally from the Fist of God album. The lyrics to to this song are pretty straight forward but fitting, he’s passionately in love with a girl who quits on him in the heat of the moment. Now he’s living with this strange combination of love and pain because for some sucker-mc reason he still loves the girl despite the fact that she’s off with a new playboy.

The production for the original is refreshing because it’s not your typical MSTRKRFT head banger but after a bunch of listens you kinda wish it was. Thankfully, there’s an electro-house producer called Wolfgang Gartner who had similar feelings about the situation…

Next up is the absolutely ballin MSTRKRFT remix of Metric’s Monster Hospital from a couple of years ago. With MSTRKRFT’s patented pounding synths backing up Emily Hanes’s earnest melodies this song is a classic. Hanes’s voice swirls, twisting around the ferocious synths to create something dark and powerful. The lyrics are so desperate and forceful that they fit perfectly with the pulsating synths that reinforce the tone of the lyrics. This is one of my all time favorite remixes and a great get hype song to boot. Enjoy.

Great band, this record is great. It’s the sort of music that I’d classify as pop punk but the gruff vocals and guitar interplay have shades of Hot Water Music in ‘em. It’s melodic and catchy.

Cocaine addicted clowns and songs about a holiday to celebrate addiction... sounds like your typical NOFX release. When I heard that NOFX was going to release "Cokie The Clown EP", featuring 5 unreleased songs that was recorded during the "Coaster" sessions, I got to admit, I was pretty stoked. I actually liked "Coaster", and think it may have been the best NOFX release since "So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes".From the moody title track (possibly a metaphor for any drug addicted entertainer?) that features Melvin singing a decent amount, to the high energy Fermented and Flailing, I was actually really surprised by how solid Cokie The Clown is, and am wondering why these songs didn't make the "Coaster" cut.

The album opens with “Cokie The Clown,” a song that, in concert with the album’s cover art, offers up Fat Mike as a caricature of himself, recast as a drug-addled clown dragging his patrons down with him. It’s followed up with “Straight Outta Massachusetts,” an anecdotal song that relates, in a silly way, Mike’s move from Massachusetts to California as a kid. And the song surrounding the lyrics is top-notch power pop punk.

Ah, the Pursuit of Happiness. It is a foundational principle upon which the United States was built, a movie in which Will Smith cried a lot, and an action that probably gets boys, girls, husbands, wives, boyfriends, and girlfriends into more trouble than it’s ultimately worth.
Never you mind, death professor, Kid Cudi has taken all of those associations and thrown them out the window. What is left is an elegant slice of modern hip hop that’s supplemented by MGMT and Ratatat. What’s not to love?

I have found myself to be a bit on the obsessive side over the past month of my life. I worked a lot... too much...

And all this rambling brings me to this track. This track written about losing someone. This track which I believe is the perfect commentary on the war the USA is currently fighting (in two countries no less). This song is quietly desperate and melancholic. It’s filled with honest emotions and genuine heartache. And I know every word as if I wrote it myself.

It’s been said that John Samson (lead singer of The Weakerthans) wrote this song for a friend of his whom died in the war in Afghanistan. It’s also known that the title is lifted from a painting by the artist Edward Hopper. It’s a beautiful song and I feel that if I don’t share it with everyone it will be stuck in my head for ages and I won’t ever listen to another album.

This song is a party. Like a whole party. A really good party. All in one song. You know how I feel about this: I feel awesome! Boston’s Bodega Girls previously gave us a remix of Port O’Brien that didn’t leave me expecting this level of fun from their original material. “Ain’t That Cold” is a back-and-forth breakup throwdown between jilted lovers that finishes the fighting by 2:55. The next 2 instrumental minutes of party I are surely for the sweet dance-off. (Winner gets the cat.) I love how they tae their time with the track and clocking at over 6 minutes it still ends too soon. Bodega Girls’ straight up guitar and drums party are definitely being slept on right now. They have barely 1300 listens on Last.fm despite a second stellar track “She’s Into Black Guys.” Grab that one over at RCRD•LBL and if you are really feeling them then bust over to their fundraising site where they are offering some wild package deals to raise funds for recording.

There's a couple ways to measure how great a band actually is. When their output is prodigious enough, a surefire sign is not being able to anthologize them with anything less than two CDs. Once you have all the "hits," rarities, b-sides, soundtrack contributions, and album cuts you like and you can't get it all on one disc (and it takes up at least a lot of disc two), you know you have a potentially great band on your hands.This is tricky in the case of a band like Bad Religion. As much as it pains me to say this, they're basically the punk rock version of U2 or AC/DC

You know them from their ubiquitous “Cobrastyle,” if nothing else. Earlier this summer they dropped this new track to tie us over until a supposed fall release of their next LP, Devils Music. “Get Mama A House” is all kinds of goofiness, with tongue in cheek lyrics about organized crime cartels and selling-out. It’s definitely a fun listen, but doesn’t really touch “Cobrastyle” (especially not Robyn’s cover), or my Teddybears favorite, “Yours To Keep” with Neneh Cherry (brother of Eagle Eye!). Devils Music supposedly a party album and contains contributions from Slick Rick, Wayne Coyne, and Sting’s daughter Coco Summer. Sweeeeet.

Here a great indie-whateveryoucallit- band. A friend has been bugging me about The xx. I got home late tonight and put them on. Good timing. Their music is made for the last-scotch-of-the-night, winding down, droopy eyelids hour. The sound includes touches of electro, a dash of soul-bossanova, a little r&b and well-placed guitars all tied together by the guazey boy-girl vocals of Oliver Sim and Romy Croft. The London 4-piece plays a kind of downer-pop that may go down as my favorite release of the year.

Last night’s Family Guy was hilarious. It was mainly Peter becoming obsessed with the old 60’s song “Surfin Bird” by the Trashmen, which is annoying as can be, and then he meets Jesus and tries to help him reveal himself to the world. I’d never heard that song before, but even though Peter sings it something like 15 times throughout the episode, we still cracked up each time as he did his little bird is the word dance.

Whenever a band splits or a member leaves, although you always know it will never be the same, you automatically hope something new will rise from the ashes. Thankfully that is the case with Gabriel Stebbing, the now former bassist of English leftfield pop act Metronomy.

Recently Joseph Mount announced Stebbing’s departure, saying the reason he left after three years was to focus on his own band, Your Twenties.Based out of the London (UK) area, Young Twenties are a four-piece who aren't quite as inventive as Stebbing's previous band, but use some of the same bent notes, choppy rhythms and sly pop sense. "Caught Wheel" shares the same angular spunk XTC injected into their late '70s period classics, with the studio shrewdness and melodic punch of celebrated Frenchmen Phoenix. As far as spin-offs go, Your Twenties should satisfy anyone looking for more of Metronomy's wonky goodness.

Skate deck design

Here a skateboard deck design, done with 2 others people from my team at World Industries. A gift for SOFA. Since 07, they stop designing decks. What's project SOFA? The aim of this project is to support contemporary artists by proposing them to express their capabilities on limited collections of boards, tees or fleeces. When Megan asked my help for this project, i didn't know a thing about SOFA. Hourray for SOFA, keep the good job!

The last deck, they was produce was a special edition for TILT and his book. The deck was a little controversy... :) Personnaly, i won't ride on this deck, but i'll hang it on my wall. :)

Who is TILT : a great graffiti artist from France. He have done a special project : Graffiti on nude grils.

Nofx - coaster

NOFX have released a new album and this one is titled Coaster and it is their 11th. Did you hear that Fat Wreck Chords is now pricing all CD’s at $10 or less? This is the first new release with that pricing. It’s hard to believe that the band has been around since 1983 but as someone who has been listening to NOFX as long as I’ve been listening to punk music (and that’s a long time), all I can say is that NOFX knows exactly what they do well and has been doing just that for fucking ever now.

Coaster is a solid but not groundbreaking album, but really, what did you expect? I’m fan but not a die-hard, really, since 1997’s album So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes : it’s all just NOFX to me. Fat Mike does tread new ground lyrically with the song "My Orphan Year", the most heartfelt and serious song I've ever heard by NOFX. The rest of the songs are your typical NOFX.
