Well, here some catchy tunes that fall somewhere near the intersection of indie-pop, power-pop, plain rock and pop-punk. Normally I wouldn’t give a second look/listen to this kind of band, but hey, I trust the dudes at Beartrap. Big guitars, catchy melodies, and sweet vocal harmonies find these Solemn Boyz sounding (to me at least) a lot like The Stereo and/or Jimmy Eat World. The EP is out now on Viper Bite Records. (so awful with the Z at the end of boyz...)

Good Luck

Well, well.. What to say, they are a trio and employ the increasingly popular trick of combining both male and female vocals as well as that jangly and rough but not crunchy guitar sound that I like. Yeah. Their debut album Into Lake Griffy is catchy and spastic. It’s fast without being aggressive. It’s spontaneous-sounding without being terribly sloppy (just little). It’s anything but totally straightforward. Three punk kids walk into a bar, get drunk, write songs, and make one hell of a record. What a pleasant surprise Into Lake Griffy is. If you are looking for comparisons, is sounds like The New Dress meets Lemuria and I might even hear nods to early Weakerthans stuff and (you know) Plan-It-X and/or No Idea records stuff.

Nerf Herder

I thought Nerf Herder broke up years ago but then I got their latest album IV in my mailbox. I still can’t take ‘em seriously but I don’t think they take themselves seriously either. So what you get is pop-punkish-power-pop complete with goofy lyrics and silly synths. Do I even have to say that this is inane and yet somehow totally fun?

Living with Lions

Imagine a world where one band could be equal parts old-school Dude Ranch-era Blink 182, A Wilhelm Scream, and Digger. Well, maybe that’s not really hard to imagine, especially if you’ve already heard Make Your Mark, the new full-length from Vancouver, BC, Canada’s Living With Lions. They play that crunchy yet melodic post-emo pop-punk that’s basically all the rage these days except that instead of auto-tuned harmonies, there’s a little more grit to these vocals that often borders on shouting. Mmm… tasty. Make Your Mark has plenty of fist-pumping sing along moments but nothing here is revolutionary and/or really out of the ordinary. Solid.
